根據韓國現代〈Hyundai〉汽車公司表示，該公司日前與中國北京汽車工業有限公司簽訂一項有關雙方合資在北京近郊設立年產20萬輛規模汽車廠之合作意願書。該意願書之內容為現代〈Hyundai〉汽車公司至2005年止，將分兩次投資2億5，000萬美元與中國北京汽車工業有限公司合資成立「北京現代汽車有限公司」，雙方各持50%之股分，經營權則屬於現代汽車公司。雙方計劃在2005年之前，將目前北京汽車工業有限公司年產10萬輛之生產規模，逐步擴充生產設備，至終將年產量擴增至20萬輛規模。
現代〈Hyundai〉汽車公司同時表示，此次該公司與北京汽車工業有限公司之合作，即希望提前打下在大陸市場之銷售基礎，以建立現代汽車之品牌形象。目前中國汽車登記總數量僅有1,600萬輛左右，但因中共加入WTO及即將舉辦北京奧運等契機，將使中國車輛的數量急遽增加，估計至2010年可增至5,000萬輛，該公司擬儘快與北京汽車工業有限公司簽妥正式契約，並於今年10月份起開始生產EF-Sonata (包括計程車)及Avante XD等適合大陸地區使用之車種。
