近年來的全球金融海嘯及能源危機，讓2009年全球汽車產業產生大洗牌現象。2009上半年， TOYOTA與GM依舊維持世界前兩大銷售量的地位，即使兩個品牌均較去年同期衰退20%以上，排名第三的VW AG則逐漸減少與前兩名的差距，相較去年僅減少5%，使得市佔率相對提昇。

厲害的是來自南韓的HYUNDAI汽車集團超越Ford而爬昇到第四名表現氣勢如虹，雖然較去年同期也是呈衰退，不過減少幅度為十大汽車集團最少，僅為2﹪而已。。GM的前半年銷售還包含兩家破產正在進行拍賣或重整階段的Saab與Pontiac。
