HYUNDAI原本就是韓國規模最大的汽車工業集團，不過為了降低原物料的生產成本，對於新車競爭條件所造成的影響，最近HYUNDAI集團旗下的「現代製鐵」煉鋼廠即將完工，未來將降低對於進口鋼鐵材質的依賴程度。
根據這項消息指出，現代製鐵位於韓國忠清南道的工廠的二座高爐已經建成，這是韓國目前最大的投資項目之一，完工後HYUNDAI將停止從日本的汽車鋼材進口方式，未來生產汽車用的鋼材將自給自足。
今年四月份，全球性鋼鐵價格上漲之後，全球車廠均受到原物料上漲的成本壓力，HYUNDAI也在夏季分別於韓國與美國市場，宣布調升建議售價二個百分點的策略，以降低原物料上漲帶來的成本壓力。
由於汽車整車直接用鋼量占全行業用鋼量比重五成左右，所以鋼材價格上漲對汽車整車和零配件行業影響最大。
現代製鐵新工廠至2011年總投入金額將達5.24萬億韓圜（約合新台幣1395.4億元），是目前韓國最大的投資專案，現代製鐵將建二座350萬噸的高爐，年產量鋼材達七百萬噸，到2015年總產量將達1200萬噸。
現代制鐵表示，在滿足HYUNDAI韓國廠生產需要之後，也會視情況出口到韓國以外的工廠。
