缸內直噴技術在近幾年來已經成為引擎效能提升必備的技術，在大部分豪華車品牌像是BUICK、BMW、PORSCHE等車廠已經將此技術編為全系列引擎應用之後，在全球車廠排名力爭上游的HYUNDAI在日前也宣布即將發表集團旗下第一具燃油直噴引擎，而第一輛受惠的車款相信各位不陌生，就是即將於2009年台北車展首度登入台灣亮相的2010年式Sonata，不過不是在2010年，是在2011年將取代Sonata車系原有的V6引擎。

HYUNDAI日前透漏了這具全新Theta II四缸引擎的初步細節，研發時間花了46個月並且投入超過1.47億美元，Theta II四缸引擎被賦予了高度的期待，除了能夠廣泛適用於未來的各種車型中之外，效能的提升以及再發展的潛能更是HYUNDAI寄與厚望之處，像是搭配渦輪增壓套件或是高性能設定的研發都是引擎工程團隊日後持續進行的工作項目。

而在Theta II四缸引擎的動力在高壓縮比11.3:1的助益下，這具排氣量為2.4L的燃油直噴引擎將可輸出最大馬力198hp以及25.57kgm峰值扭力，儘管是已經足夠用來取代目前2010年式Sonata所搭載的3.3L V6引擎（249hp），但是HYUNDAI對於V6引擎在Sonata車系中是否完全被取代仍然處於評估階段中。

另外，HYUNDAI在北美的性能跑車Genesis Coupe 2.0T也是計畫中將搭載此具新引擎的車款，因為目前Genesis Coupe 2.0T所使用的引擎設計是借鏡於MITSUBISHI的4B11舊引擎，因此能夠在未來使用自家新引擎的設計自然也是HYUNDAI心裡的期許之一，不過仍會保留Genesis Coupe的3.8L V6引擎（306hp），也就是說HYUNDAI初步針對Theta II四缸引擎的起點規畫是在中型房車市場。
