在北京汽車工業與韓國現代正式合作，並且推出中國製造的EF Sonata上市之後，不但在當地市場取得相當優異的銷售成果，日前更慶祝其第五萬輛索娜塔的下線儀式，在北京街頭更有為數眾多的計程車在路上行駛，為了提升現代品牌在中國大陸汽車市場的佔有率，最近北京現代汽車更計畫建立第二廠，並且希望在2007年時達到60萬輛的年產能！
日前，在2003北京經濟論壇上，明年夏季北京現代要在順義再建一個年產能30萬輛的第二轎車廠，2007年建成投產。屆時，北京現代兩個轎車廠的總生產能力將達到60萬輛，使北京現代成為能和一汽－大眾、上海大眾等著名企業並駕齊驅的重要轎車生產基地。
北京現代自2002年12月23日第一輛新車索納塔下線以來，截至今年10月底，已累計銷售索納塔轎車4.5萬輛，實現銷售收入74億元，創利稅約30億元。目前，北京現代已啟動二期10萬輛的生產能力改造項目，通過增資擴股已籌集了約10億元的資金，保証在今年年底完成經濟型轎車伊蘭特的生產和投放，明年年初形成批量生產。北京現代已計劃明年讓索納塔和伊蘭特這兩款主力車型的市場佔有率達到同級別轎車市場的10％以上。到2005年，要形成30萬輛的生產能力。到2007年第二轎車廠建成以後，北京現代的產能將達到年產60萬輛，並達到人均年生產汽車70輛的生產效率。
據北京市統計局最新數字統計表明，1月到9月，北京汽車產量達到24.5萬輛，增長了99.1%，創北京汽車生產史上的峰值，北京汽車行業對全市工業增長的貢獻率達到了47.2%，這意味著北京近50%的工業增長來自汽車。其中北京現代的轎車產量突破4萬輛，增長了12倍，產值佔到北京工業總產值的12%。有關人士認為，隨著北京現代2008年產能60萬輛的實現，北京現代越來越體現出對北京經濟的拉動作用。
